Tobago, known world-wide for its peaceful environment where souls in need of clean, green, and serene come, is facing the threat of social destabilization by a rising rate of crime and violence. As early as November 2023, Tobago CivilNET saw this threat and planned an all-of-society Crime Symposium entitled ‘An Introduction to the Public Health Approach to Crime and Violence in Tobago’, featuring Dr Ulric Johnson from Boston who is the founder and director of Teens Against Gang Violence, a peer leadership, youth, and family program. A day-long workshop with stake-holders spanning all-of-society were to be guided by Dr Johnson into the expected outcomes wherein the participating stakeholders would have improved knowledge of the application of the Public Health Approach to Crime and Violence, and a comprehensive action plan developed for its application in Tobago. Eastern Credit Union being the sole sponsor of our initiative, has allowed us to retrofit our approach within our realized budget while improving on the diversity of educational information to help empower the society in the face of this rise in violent crimes. We designed a series of virtual educational forums, sans the workshop, to be presented in 4 sessions, (1) Tuesday, November 12, 2024 from 6pm-8pm – ‘Crime and Taxation: Is Gang Violence Worth The Price?’ with Quincy Joseph, an ex-Federal Convict now the Founder and Executive Director of No Youth Left Behind, (2) Tuesday, November 19, 2024 from 6pm-8pm – ‘The Untold Truth of Our Society’s Failure to Develop Our Youth’ with Dr David Muhammad, the Caribbean Representative of the Nation of Islam & director of the Black Agenda, (3) Tuesday, November 26, 2024 from 6pm-8pm – ‘Joyful Learning as an Antidote to Failing, Ailing and Misbehaving among the Youth’ with Camille Swapp, Child and Adolescent Developmental Psychologist, (4) Tuesday, December 3, 2024 from 6pm-8pm – ‘The Public Health Approach to Crime and Violence ‘ with Dr Ulric Johnson, founder and director of Transformative Counseling, Coaching and Consultation (TLC), founder and director of Teens Against Gang Violence, a peer leadership, youth, and family program.
